Party reps talk Dominican economy

first_img Share Public Relations Officer of the Dominica Labour Party and Dominica’s Ambassador to Venezuela, Dr Philbert AaronThe Journalism Club of the Dominica State College (DSC) held a political forum on April 3 under the theme “The Future of the National Economy: A Hope for the Youth”, where representatives from the two main political parties discussed the local economy.Representing the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) Dr Philbert Aaron, Dominica’s Ambassador to Venezuela and DLP’s public relations officer, spoke of how the current administration has and is working to build the local economy while Joshua Francis who represented the United Worker’s Party (UWP) sought to shed light on the wrongdoings of the DLP government and to present ‘Team Dominica’s’ plans regarding the economy.Presenting first Dr Aaron said when the DLP government came into office in 2000 it met a “hole in the economy; a massive debt”.The task to restoring the local economy he said was not an easy one and took the government tremendous effort to first stabilize the economy and then build institutions such as the new DSC campus.Over the last fourteen years he added more persons have graduated from high school, obtained associate and bachelor degrees and obtained more success in higher education than ever before in the history of Dominica. He told the students that their concerns therefore must be where they will be able to use the skills and training acquired upon completion.Opposition Leader Hector John and UWP’s Political Leader Lennox Linton“I will remind you that there are a lot of people talking down the Dominican economy but there is innovation in the Dominican economy both in the public sector and the private sector,” he stated.Dr Aaron said the growth of Ross University School of Medicine in the north of the island over the past twenty years has allowed for job creation for citizens.“[It] is a major innovation, a major part of the Dominican economy”.Moreover, Dr Aaron added that the government’s initiative to develop geothermal energy will greatly impact the economy by decreasing the price of energy and becoming a leader in geothermal development. He explained that unlike other small countries who explored geothermal energy and have gone into debt or signed agreements that in the end foreign investors would own the resource, the Dominica Government raised the funds for the project on its own instead of acquiring funding through project partners who would own shares from the beginning. In doing so, he continued, the resource could be developed and proven before going into partnership.“Last week in Roseau, Dominica there was a conference on geothermal energy production…Today the resource has been proven … its quality is high, the potential for change in the economy is tremendous because it will lower the cost of electricity significantly and we still own the resource,” he said.He told the students that they will one day be the owners, leaders, managers and scientists in the geothermal resource of Dominica.Attorney at law Joshua FrancisHowever, attorney at law Joshua Francis for contributing to the economy’s decline instead of its improvement. After experiencing two recessions, in 2003 and 2009 the economy in Dominica is “saddled with a lack of innovation, a lack of creativity, a dying private sector and a booming public sector which is unhealthy in our economy”.Francis stated that the government’s decision to move away from agriculture in hopes of generating more revenue through tourism resulted in the further decline of the economy. This move he said was a deliberate one and ‘Team Dominica’ he said will review this. The economy is faced with many problems including high unemployment rates, high import bills and a high national debt.Team Dominica he said has a construct beyond political colours, it is one that is here to break political tribalism as they stand for national patriotism, national pride and national spirit.“One of our endeavours is to ensure that we renew, we rebuild and we refocus on our economy”.“Team Dominica is committed to boost agricultural production, we are committed to send or motivate or empower our farmers to go back on the farms. The market is right here for agricultural produce,” he said and added that Dominica is blessed with the resources.Soft loans and subsidies he added will be provided where necessary in addition to technical support to facilitate the export of local agricultural produce to OECS countries. The UWP he said is therefore committed to improve the port infrastructure.“We are committed to be involved in the facilitation and acquisition of a ferry, a cargo ferry to transport our agricultural produce to our neighbouring islands,” in addition to the removal of import duties on producer goods like equipment used in production. Moreover, he revealed that other economy boosting plans of the UWP include work in tourism, light manufacturing, ICT services, finance, construction and renewable energy.Francis also revealed that the UWP, once elected, intends to review the income tax system and VAT in addition to increasing GDP by 6 to 7 percent a year. He also spoke of the party’s plan to provide 5,000 jobs in the first three years of its leadership.Dominica Vibes News Tweet Share 301 Views   one commentcenter_img Share EducationLocalNewsTertiary Party reps talk Dominican economy by: – April 4, 2014 Sharing is caring!last_img read more

Royals keep tweaking roster as 60-game season approaches

first_img The Kansas City Royals had the entire offseason, all of spring training and, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic putting sports on hold, much of the summer to consider ways to tweak and improve their roster going forward. They were still making moves a week before their abbreviated 60-game schedule was set to begin. The team traded left-handed reliever Tim Hill to the San Diego Padres late Thursday for talented but injury prone outfield prospect Franchy Cordero and young right-hander Ronald Bolanos. The move came after the Royals decided their lousy bullpen from a year ago had been sufficiently upgraded and with an eye toward next season and beyond, when several of their outfielders are due to become free agents or potentially retire. The 25-year-old Cordero was the big prize for Kansas City. He only has played 79 big league games over parts of three seasons thanks to a slew of injuries, which last year limited him to just nine games. But along with a .240 average, Cordero flashed power by belting 10 homers and scoring 36 runs in his relatively modest work load.“I think all of our guys understand we have some talent in our outfield and this is another player that’s been on the horizon as a rising star,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said, “so it’s going to be nice to watch how he develops.”The Royals appear set in the outfield heading into next Friday night’s opener against the Indians in Cleveland. But left-fielder Alex Gordon signed a one-year deal and could be playing his final season, right fielder Jorge Soler can become a free agent after the 2021 season, and outfielders Bubba Starling and Brett Phillips are out of options as they contend for a spot on the 30-man roster. All of which leaves Hunter Dozier as the only outfielder under long-term club control.”Franchy is really one of the more tooled-out players that you’ll see,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “He has unbelievable power from the left side. He has above average defensive skills. He has tremendous makeup. Unfortunately, for the last two years he hasn’t been able to stay on the field for whatever reason. He’s still very young.”Matheny acknowledged that keeping Cordero on the field will be crucial to reaching his full potential.“We’ve known Franchy for a while, understand he has an elite skill set in a number of ways with what he can do at the plate,” Matheny said. “A lot of it’s going to be whether or not we can keep him healthy. That will be up to the medical team and strength-and-conditioning guys to put a template in place. How do we protect him?”Matheny didn’t rule out Cordero or Bolanos, who made his big league debut last September, from helping the Royals this season. The unpredictable nature of the coronavirus coupled with expanded rosters puts flexibility at a premium — a point driven home when catching prospect Nick Dini and pitcher Daniel Tillo tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday.Moore said Cordero and Bolanos will likely begin the season at the Royals’ alternate training site, though. As for the bullpen, which was historically abysmal last season, the Royals believe the depth they added during the regular offseason coupled with the emergence of some young power arms will allow them to better hold late-inning leads.“We do feel like we have some quality left-handed arms,” Moore said. “I’m not going to say they’re more accomplished than Timmy Hill at this point, but we like the emergence of a lot of our power arms, and we think that we’re going to utilize them in some of those more meaningful roles.”Image credits: AP FOLLOW US Associated Press Television News WATCH US LIVE SUBSCRIBE TO US Last Updated: 18th July, 2020 12:26 IST Royals Keep Tweaking Roster As 60-game Season Approaches The Kansas City Royals had the entire offseason, all of spring training and, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic putting sports on hold, much of the summer to consider ways to tweak and improve their roster going forwardcenter_img LIVE TV COMMENT Written By First Published: 18th July, 2020 12:26 ISTlast_img read more
