Effect of HIV on the Disabled Require Greater Attention – UNAIDS

first_imgAdvertisements FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (USAIDS) country representative for Jamaica, the Bahamas and Cuba, Miriam Maluwa, has called for greater attention to be placed on HIV and its effect on the disabled community. “The issues of disability and HIV require attention in Jamaica. The disabled community in Jamaica constitute one of the most vulnerable groups,” she stated.Ms. Maluwa was speaking at the launch of the UNAIDS/Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities programme, which is designed to empower persons with disabilities in the fight against the disease, recently at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston. The initiative entitled: ‘Education and economic empowerment for persons with disabilities responding to HIV and AIDS, will involve two components – public education and income generation. UNAIDS is financially supporting the programme with an initial $2.5 million allocation and the initiative is expected to generate more funds as it evolves. The public education programme component will involve materials that are printed for the HIV/AIDS campaign being transformed into an accessible format for members of the disabled community. Messages about the dangers of HIV/AIDS, will be printed in Braille, on key rings and T-shirts, and distributed among the disabled community. Text messages will be sent to persons, who are deaf.In the meantime, the economic generation aspect is designed to help persons access business skills and small grants to initiate and manage their own businesses, thus reducing their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. Discussions are at an advanced stage with the Jamaica National Small Business Loan Facility to implement this aspect of the project as quickly as possible.Businesses must be economically viable and sustainable and may include selling phone cards, cooking gas, industrial detergent, and raising broiler and layer chickens. The participants will also benefit from training from the Jamaica Business Development Centre.Lauding the focus on income generation, Mrs. Maluwa said “statistics are showing that approximately 200,000 persons living with a disability in Jamaica have less than one per cent of income.” She argued that empowering them to earn their own income will “reduce possible vulnerability and abuse by those who are taking care of them for lack of economic stability.”In the meantime, the UNAIDS Representative said that leadership is required at the individual, community, political and national levels in the fight against the disease. “Sustaining this leadership and accelerating action on AIDS should involve everybody, religious leaders, community youth, council leaders, chief executives, trade unions and young people,” Mrs. Maluwa stated. She noted further that the atmosphere should be created, where people, who are living with HIV, feel comfortable coming out and openly contributing to the society, not withstanding their HIV status.“It should also involve behaviour responsibility, changes in our sexual practices. It should also involve treating others with dignity and respect irrespective of their HIV status, thus reducing stigma and discrimination,” she stated. In his remarks, State Minister in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Andrew Gallimore said “we have to use every available avenue to let the persons who have disabilities know all about this virus, know about how it is spread, and know about how the changes in lifestyle can reduce your risk significantly.”The World Health Organisation and UNAIDS estimates that there are 33 million people globally living with HIV. This year alone 2.5 million people were infected with HIV and 2.1 million people are dying of AIDS-related diseases. BlackBerry sues Facebook on patent infringement

first_img Español Home BlackBerry sues Facebook on patent infringement Related Nuevas funciones de Instagram para empresas y creadores de contenido BlackBerry filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Facebook, claiming the social networking company’s WhatsApp and Instagram apps copied key BlackBerry Messenger technology and features, multiple media reports stated.“Defendants created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative security, user interface, and functionality-enhancing features,” BlackBerry said in a filing with a US federal court in Los Angeles. In response, Facebook deputy general counsel Paul Grewal said: “Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, Blackberry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight”.“Blackberry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business,” he added. The case is part of a strategy announced by BlackBerry CEO John Chen in 2015 to use its patent portfolio to fund the company’s other activities, including its software and enterprise divisions.BlackBerry is focusing on its core enterprise mobility software and continues to licence its portfolio of some 40,000 patents and applications covering technologies including wireless communications, networking infrastructure, messaging, operating systems and cybersecurity.“Protecting shareholder assets and intellectual property is the job of every CEO,” a BlackBerry representative said in an email to Reuters. The company said while this is not central to BlackBerry’s strategy, “we have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies”.This move is the latest in many such cases BlackBerry is fighting. In February 2017 the company filed a patent infringement case against Nokia for using protected technology in its networking products. The case is still pending. In May 2017, Qualcomm agreed to pay BlackBerry $940 million to settle an arbitration decision and in October BlackBerry settled a patent spat with handset maker Blu Products. Connecting Trails to Community

first_img“These will be public recreation assets for generations to come,” WLP Executive Director Heidi Van Everen said, noting that its cost-share agreement with the Forest Service ensures protection of the land in perpetuity. To establish those connections, WLP has been awarded $75,000 from the Montana Recreational Trails Program, $25,000 from the National Forest Foundation, $20,000 from Flathead National Forest, and private matching funds from local donors excited about the project, including Rick and Sue Williams, who have owned property in Whitefish for more than three decades, witnessing the area’s growth firsthand. Last year, they announced a $50,000 gift to WLP to support the next phase of trail development at Holbrook. With plans to break ground on the new section of trail in July, the team at WLP has been researching the history of Holbrook Overlook, which was once a widely used site with expansive views of the entire Flathead Valley — and even provided a scenic backdrop in the 1993 family film “Beethoven’s 2nd.” Since Big Mountain Road was re-routed in 2008, however, the Holbrook Overlook was largely lost to the community and the existing infrastructure has slowly faded.  “Improving and redeveloping this historic recreation site with managed, non-motorized recreation will add invaluable benefits for locals and visitors,” according to WLP. “With 3.5 miles of family friendly loop trails, an accessible interpretive loop to an inspiring Whitefish Lake overlook, picnic tables and day use amenities, the Holbrook Overlook will once again become a valued public land recreation destination just minutes from town.” Holbrook will also serve as a starting point for longer trail adventures on the Whitefish Trail to Hellroaring Basin, over to Smith Lake, and on into the Whitefish Range.  “We’re excited about it not only because it represents the first recreation action of the project, but also because it’s such a broad spectrum of community engagement,” Alan Myers-Davis, director of development at WPL, said. “Eventually it will provide access to the whole front face of the Whitefish Range, with the Whitefish Trail serving as that connection.” A year ago in Whitefish, just as the community regained its footing following the pandemic’s first shockwaves — grocery aisles were restocked, gear rooms converted into home offices, personal spaces recalibrated — a curious manifestation of the public health crisis began to take shape amid the dirt and the dust and the divots of local trailheads.  From dawn to dusk, the parking areas bustled bumper-to-bumper, brimming with cars and trucks bearing exotic place names like “Texas” and “Delaware.” For many local residents, it was the first indication that the COVID-19 pandemic would have lasting consequences in the community, prompting both consternation and relief as the trails, as well as the protected lands they gird, became wellsprings of gratitude. They were teeming full. “Even before the other connectivity happens, Holbrook will become a standalone area that will serve as a great attraction to the community and also provide a space for folks coming and going from Whitefish Mountain Resort,” Margosia Jadkowski, program director at WLP, said. “So we have long-term plans that are very exciting in terms of conservation and connectivity, but the community benefits will be realized very soon.”center_img From Beaver Lake to Swift Creek, Spencer to Skyles, Lion Mountain to Big Mountain, the Whitefish Trail network provided a haven from the hellscape of breaking news headlines, an outlet to quell anxiety, and an outdoor setting to safely socialize, with water bottles replacing water coolers as a conversational centerpiece as office life drifted into obsolescence.  “We give to WLP and the Whitefish Trail every year because outdoor recreation is such a big part of the community,” according to a statement from the Williams family. “The quality-of-life benefits are substantial — not to mention the economic impact — and we feel that permanently protecting our surrounding local lands is paramount, especially now.”  Email Even before the new segment provides a conduit to other trails, such as the Ralph Thayer and Smokey Range trails, it will provide local trail users with a day-use area and 3.5 miles of stacked loop trails near the base of Whitefish Mountain Resort, located just above the current Big Mountain Trailhead. Indeed, WLP is moving forward on its ambitious plan with renewed vigor, and is preparing to break ground on a new trailhead and looped trail system along Big Mountain Road, while also developing a 25-year maintenance plan for the Whitefish Trail that will consider using resort tax dollars. Dubbed “Holbrook Overlook,” the new section of trail promises to be among the most popular in town, reconnecting the community of trail users to a former U.S. Forest Service site that was once widely used. Logging last year was the first step in the Flathead National Forest’s Taylor Hellroaring Project, which blends forest management, fire mitigation and habitat improvements with increased recreation development opportunities like trails. Our local conservation lands were a refuge for many as we looked for new ways to recreate during the pandemic, and we enjoyed seeing more families and friends spending time outside together.”last_img read more

New Ritchey Logic Wet White Headset Spacers

first_imgIn hindsight, we should’ve seen these coming…Ritchey introduced their full Wet White cockpit recently, but one had to contend with hideous black or carbon headset spacers.  What was one to do?They’re $41.95 for a set of 10 and are available in either 5mm or 10mm heights.  Now, if someone would just make some high-end white cranks or figure out a way to magically anodize in white, they’d be rich!last_img

UP Lady Maroons tempers UAAP expectations

first_imgOn their way to the PVL title, the Lady Maroons defeated Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, while they stunned University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses for the PSL tiara.“UAAP is another game altogether. We only played against three of the other teams. So, I don’t wanna judge ourselves before playing against everybody else,” the Kenyan mentor said.“We want to go out there and win the UAAP, but we have to tread carefully. We have to be polite as we move on, train and work hard because it’s a really big challenge for us,” he added.Okumu is also thankful that there is still over a full month before the start of the UAAP competition since he is still having a hard time putting up a lineup from his talented pool consisting of veterans and incoming rookies.“I have used almost all of our players in the pre-season so it’s gonna be hard to choose, so don’t ask me my line-up for UAAP,” Okumu said. “But, for me, it is a good problem to have.”***For a well-known sports patron, Christmas season is the most wonderful time of the year as this is the time when personalities from all walks of life are approaching him for “gift.”“Automatic na ‘yan na kapag Christmas season pila pila ang mga nagnanais na makaambon ng grasya mula sa kanya,” said a source. May ‘Happy New Year’ ding kasunod ‘yun. Ang dami niyang money,” the source concluded./PN EVEN with two pre-season championships, University of the Philippines Lady Maroons believes that they are still far from being called as contenders for the upcoming UAAP season.According to Lady Maroons head coach Godfrey Okomu, there are still a lot of work to do as their title runs in the Premier V-League and Philippine Superliga does not necessarily translate to a success in UAAP.“It means a lot of pressure. For them and for me. That’s what it means,” said Okumu. “We had a trophy, and this is the second one. It’s just a big pressure, and just hoping for the best.”“We wouldn’t like to play so well in the offseason, and when the real tournament comes up, we don’t perform,” he added. “So I believe, it puts us in a very tight situation, but the fight is there. So we’re gonna fight until the end.”last_img read more

Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Like this:Like Loading… RelatedTerkait Masalah Seat Pitch, FAA Dipaksa Perbaharui Peraturan Penerbangan02/10/2017In “Domestik”Tolak Atur Regulasi Kursi Pesawat, FAA: Kenyamanan Penumpang Bukan Masalah Keamanan13/07/2018In “Featured”Kisruh di Kabin, Penumpang Kursi Belakang Kesal Pukul Kursi Depan Karena Bersandar26/02/2020In “Featured”last_img read more
