And yes, that’s how it works: You give one exception then you can’t stop the next one. The council approved a re-platting and a developer’s agreement that was needed in order for the project to continue.A developer representing an architectural firm of CGW Transportation Consultants who in turn were representing the new property owners Ridge Investment Group LLC were at the meeting Thursday. They said they hope to be open in September. Because of the tight schedule a special meeting was set for last night. One of the issues was a variance, or exception, for the allowed height of the sign the store will have. The long term plan for the area limits the size and height of signs, but the developers wanted a sign larger than what the code allowed. They settled on a 25-foot limit for an exception, which was agreeable to the developer a well. The council talked about discussing the issue of signs further at a later time. Exceptions have already been given to Walmart and McDonalds. The store will be located north of McDonalds and at the corner of Boundary and U.S 160. Seventeenth street will also border the property, and the developer will have to put in sidewalks on one side of the street. The code called for both sides to have sidewalks. The planning commision had recommended the changes, so an exception was given there as well. The developers agreement included things like water, sewer and electric. All of those issues were agreed upon so no special arrangements were needed. The developer is Ridge Investment Group and they will be leasing the property to Dollar Tree. The development company also has its eyes on the adjacent property and is hoping to develop more commercial property in the area.Follow us on Facebook.Follow us on Twitter.
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – The Chilean livestock herder who first spotted survivors of a 1972 Andean plane crash made famous by a best-selling book and Hollywood movie was reunited Friday with some of the men he helped rescue 35 years ago. Sergio Catalan was welcomed at the Montevideo airport by crash survivors whose 72-day ordeal stranded in the snowcapped Andes was recounted in the book “Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors,” by Piers Paul Read, and made into a movie in 1993. A Uruguayan air force plane carrying a private college rugby team crashed in a rugged mountain pass while en route from Montevideo to Santiago, Chile, in October 1972. Of the 45 people aboard, 16 survived more than two months on the freezing slopes by eating flesh from the bodies of other passengers killed in the crash, several later said. Two months passed without rescue, prompting a few survivors to leave the barren crash site to seek help. Eleven days later, in the foothills of the Chilean Andes, two of them came across Catalan, who rode his horse to the nearest town to alert rescuers. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Catalan was to be honored at a dinner with crash survivors on Friday night.
