KidVestments teaches children about money

first_imgBUSINESS NAME: KidVestments BUSINESS ADDRESS: 22334 James Alan Circle, Chatsworth, CA 91311 PHONE: (818) 775-1419 E-MAIL: [email protected] OWNER: Kurt S. Lowry ESTABLISHED: 2001 NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES: Two DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS: KidVestments provides investment basics and public-speaking workshops for children and teens. We’re able to come to your public or private school, or anywhere else. IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS? Yes. WHY DID YOU START THIS BUSINESS? I wanted to fill a serious need. Today’s complex and competitive society requires “financial literacy.” The earlier we teach our children the “language” of money and investing, the more likely they will be responsible with money and create wealth. This, in turn, strengthens our nation. WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA? I tapped into my experiences in training and education. I was a trainer at Countrywide Home Loans, and I’m currently a school administrator. Schools aren’t teaching children this important language. The urgency for this service is huge. HOW LONG WAS IT FROM CONCEPT TO OPENING? One year. WHAT DID YOU DO DURING THAT TIME? Bought supplies, designed presentation materials and advertised workshops. WHAT WERE YOUR START-UP COSTS, AND HOW DID YOU FINANCE THE BUSINESS? Roughly $3,000 from personal savings. WHO DID YOU RELY ON FOR ADVICE? My wife, who recognized the need for a kid-friendly, lively workshop on money and investment basics. WHAT HADN’T YOU CONSIDERED BEFORE OPENING? I didn’t realize how huge the potential is for teaching children about money and how hungry parents are for this service. WHAT IS YOUR EXPECTED REVENUE THIS YEAR? $2,000. Currently I’m part time, but I expect to expand within the next year. WHAT GOALS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE COMPANY? I want Countrywide, Bank of America, Washington Mutual or another investor to partner with me to provide these services to children all over. I want to also grow the brand name KidVestments as a name that endorses other companies’ products and services as “kid friendly” and likely to benefit children’s health, growth and development. Who wouldn’t want to invest in our children? To be considered for a small-business profile, you should have fewer than 10 employees and be locally based.
