‘Green’ energy opportunities for women

first_img26 August 2011Numerous jobs and business opportunities will arise as the government designs programmes favouring renewable energy and energy efficiency. This was the key message of a workshop for women entrepreneurs hosted by the Department of Energy in Durban on Thursday.Deputy Energy Minister Barbara Thompson told workshop delegates that initiatives such as the drive to instal solar water geysers would give South African women an opportunity to participate in the installation and maintenance processes.China has committed to training women in the installation of solar water geysers. “Once trained, these women will return to start their own enterprises or join other entrepreneurs in this area while training more women,” Thompson said.Funding, judging from the workshop, is one of the biggest problems facing women trying to break into the energy industry. Numberous delegates told stories of not being able to access finance to buy petrol stations or engage in other energy projects.Integrated Resources PlanThompson said the Integrated Resources Plan (IRP), approved by Cabinet in March this year, pays close attention to South Africa’s changing energy needs.“It talks to the importance of access to energy and an energy mix benefiting the designated groups, especially women.”The plan also seeks to stimulate local manufacturing capacity for the “green” economy, and Thompson encouraged the women also to consider opportunities in the manufacturing of energy products.Thoko Gulube, a representative from Women in Oil and Energy South Africa (WOESA), told BuaNews that skills shortages and finance rank among the most significant challenges that women face when they approach WOESA.“It’s important to get young females to acquire hard skills and study manufacturing and project management,” Gulube said.WOESA, an NGO, helps women who are in the oil, gas and renewable energy businesses, providing training and networking opportunities.Clean Energy, Education and Empowerment InitiativeThe department also wants to ensure that women start connecting to promote the use of clean energy. Earlier this week, the Energy Department launched the Clean Energy, Education and Empowerment Initiative (C3E).C3E, said Thompson, aims to inspire young women to purse clean energy-related studies, and to provide real-life, hands-on experience through team research opportunities in partnership with academic institutions.“The participation of women at this event was excellent and I am confident it has laid a solid basis that will increase the footprint of women in the energy sector.”The government’s Integrated National Electrification programme had been yielding positive results, Thompson said. In 2010, 5 000 jobs were created nationwide and women benefitted from this programme, said Thompson.“Through this programme, we are focusing on access for rural areas,” she said, adding that the department was looking into establishing Integrated Energy Centres in rural areas.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Hitachi’s Unified Compute Platform Goes for the Endzone

It is aimed at consolidating the enterprise functions of networking, storage, and compute into an orchestration layer. Virtualization is still guiding the evolution of the data center, in this case all the way to the physical form. If you like consolidating your systems into big iron with lots blinking lights, Hitachi has you covered. And if you like open systems that connect to your existing infrastructure, Hitachi believes that playing nice with others is in the domain of unified computing. If you’re interested in this idea, check out the video summary of the platform. The company shares us a deeper view of this product line and the problems it is intending to solve. Many of the opportunities targeted address budgets, for example, how to remove operating expense through the orchestration of resources. mike kirkwood Orchestration is the Huddle on Third DownOrchestration merges network, system, and storage resources as a single unit to be managed and reported in. An analogy might be found in football. In the huddle, the quarterback might call “the slant 6” and all eleven members of the team interpret that play and perform their respective jobs. Orchestration, as Hitachi describes it behaves in a similar way. It will respond to plays like “scale up for product launch”. All the members of the team (disk, server, and network) go to their respective places and do the jobs needed. And, if needed, adjust appropriately to the conditions on the field. Hitachi leverages a partnership with Microsoft’s System Management tools to closely align the plan and reality to bring more intelligence into the equation. The Computing Stack is the TeamThis product is also about abstracting systems through software. The company is betting that the coordination of the tasks of operating systems, storage and networking within a single framework provides a lot of value to the business. Hitachi takes the point of view that it is best to harmonize existing assets though open standards and looks at computing as a utility to be shared in the organization. Some of the features the product contains make it easier for organizations to achieve scale across functions and environments. It is designed to support this modern data center principles:Multi-tenancyCharge back for resourcesDistributed physical data centersPublic cloud resources through open APIsHitachi Unified Compute Platform looks like an impressive physical device. It brings together resources normally held in separate racks and hosts them in a single location and reduces a lot of the work of wiring up data centers. As we unfold another chapter in computing, Hitachi is leveraging its strength in consolidation to meet the trend of massive growth of data. At a glance, there are a lot of reasons why IT managers might choose unified computing products: cost, ease, agility. Looking out a few years, it is easy to imagine growth in this category overall. Flickr Nails Photo Privacy With New Geofence Feature

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#Location#NYT#web Related Posts The Flickr implementation of this feature lets you search for a spot on a map, then determine how big the area you want to refer to is, set the particular privacy setting for that zone apart from your account-wide default setting, then name the geofenced area. You can then choose whether or not to apply this new privacy setting to all the photos you’ve uploaded from that location in the past. Update: As commenters graciously pointed out, I misunderstood this announcement a bit – it’s actually the location of the photo that is subjected to a new privacy setting, not the photo itself. Good to know, effect is similar but a little different. I thought this was like Google Plus or Facebook privacy settings – it turns out it’s not quite the same. Flickr says it has 300 million geotagged photos uploaded to its databases already. This is the kind of feature that could really help more people feel comfortable geotagging their photos. Facebook really ought to enable this feature as well. Right: Where did I eat this wonderful dinner of grilled asparagus with shallot pepper and salmon? None of your business, unless you’re a member of my friends and family group!Heck, Twitter and everyone else ought to do this. I don’t geotag my Tweets because so many of them are posted from home and my exact address gets transmitted to all my followers. Dear Twitter, would you please set up a feature like this and let me draw circles within which I would like my location obscured to the neighborhood level? Please? Almost two years since launching, Twitter’s location feature has been a big disappointment relative to its potential and I can’t help but think that the lack of clear controls for users is a big part of that. There was a time when concepts like this might have felt super-geeky, or not of general interest to a lot of people. With the rise of smartphones and the growing sophistication of users, I think that time may well have passed. You can visit this page on Flickr to try setting up some geofences for yourself. The official announcement just went up here. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Flickr will announce a new feature this morning called Geofences, forward- and backward-looking place-specific privacy settings for the location data of the geotagged photos you upload. The feature is live right now and is really well implemented – this is something that every social network ought to enable.Geofencing is a term typically used to refer to the drawing of a line on a map where some kind of pre-determined action is triggered, it’s most established in the business of transporting goods in trucks and triggering tracking actions when those trucks enter into certain geographic zones. Flickr’s new privacy geofences are something everyone is likely to enjoy using though. I, for example, have already set up a geofence around my house prohibiting anyone but my approved contacts from seeing the photos I upload from home. Thanks, Flickr! Update: Turns out I got that wrong, the photos are subject to my previous privacy setting – it’s just the location of my house that’s now more private due to the geofence. Concerns raised over high fees charged to temporary foreign workers

first_imgOTTAWA – Canada needs to do more to protect temporary foreign workers from being charged predatory recruiting fees and falling victim to human trafficking, says a national non-profit organization that fights for the rights of refugees and vulnerable migrants. The Canadian Council of Refugees says some temporary workers brought in to fill low-wage jobs are being recruited overseas by agents who charge upwards of $40,000 to place them in a job. This has led to situations where migrant workers are left indebted to the recruiters and are then vulnerable to abuses, including human trafficking.Charging employees recruitment or placement fees is illegal, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening, says Janet Dench, executive director of the council.Often, the culprits are overseas headhunting companies or agents hired by Canadian companies to find workers, she added.“It’s widespread and it comes up again and again, people saying, ‘When I got here I had already paid this amount of money in order to get this job,’ and so people are in a very bad situation.”With fees that can range from a few thousand to, reportedly, up to $40,000, temporary foreign workers sometimes end up in debt to the recruiters. This is how they then become victims of human trafficking. Some workers also find out after coming to Canada they are not earning nearly enough money to pay off their debts to recruiters or that their work permits are shorter than they were told, Dench saysShe does admit it is hard to measure how widespread this problem is, because of what she says is a lack of enforcement and monitoring on the part of provincial and federal governments, except in Saskatchewan. There, employers can only use agents who have officially registered with government to headhunt for migrant workers, which allows government to monitor the recruitment firms and also offers workers an avenue to file a complaint.“From the federal government’s perspective, we have yet to see any meaningful action to address this problem,” Dench said. The refugee council has issued a series of report cards rating the performance of provinces and the federal government when it comes to protecting rights of migrant workers. While it noted some improvements following an investigation of the temporary foreign worker program by the auditor general last year, Ottawa did not achieve a very high grade. For its part, the federal department that oversees the temporary worker program says the issue of legal recruitment falls under provincial jurisdiction and that many provinces are taking steps to reduce exploitation and abuse of migrant workers. The federal government is spending $15 million over three years to start making unannounced, on-site inspections of workplaces that use temporary foreign employees. To help combat human trafficking, Public Safety will spend an additional $14.5 million over five years, beginning in 2018-19, and $2.89 million a year ongoing to establish a national human trafficking hotline. This will allow people to report abuse to law enforcement, refer victims and survivors to the appropriate services and collect data to better understand the scope of the problem.Dench says her council is against the idea of relying on temporary foreign workers to fill low-wage jobs at all. But if they are used, government should do more to ensure they are protected.“We recognize (government) has been doing a bit more in terms of enforcement, that’s of course welcome, but we need to see a whole lot more.”— Follow @ReporterTeresa on Twitterlast_img read more

Joint Press Statement – HE Governor Dr John Freeman and Premier Hon

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#TurksandCaicos, September 19, 2017 – Providenciales – It is ten days since Hurricane Irma devastated parts of the Turks and Caicos Islands.   We thank God that no lives were lost but we are all too conscious of the damage done to people’s homes – not least to the homes of the most disadvantaged members of our communities – as well as to core infrastructure.Since Irma’s passage across the islands we have been wholly engaged on the provision of help to those most in need and upon the process of gradual recovery from Irma’s worst effects, especially in our family Islands.   To this end the TCIG has been and remains totally dedicated through all relevant agencies led by DDME but including government ministries and also non-governmental bodies and organisations, not least the commercial sector to direct help and assistance where most needed. But assistance and recovery from such a disaster cannot be achieved by TCI alone, resilient as the people of these Islands are and as they have proved once again.   We have therefore welcomed the very considerable level of advice and direct help provided by the UK, Canada, Cayman Islands, Bermuda and other governments and by regional and other international bodies and organisations.   Such assistance is ongoing, but we wish here to highlight the following contributions – which in the case of military forces are not about boots and policing but about vital aid to local communities which is being warmly welcomed – to assist immediately and directly the recovery of the most challenged parts of these Islands:– UK military have been helping to clear debris and repair buildings in order to restore services.   For example they have cleared out several Government buildings including the Treasury to allow reconstruction to commence.– In South Caicos, the UK military have made repairs to the clinic, decontaminated water storage tanks and have cleaned up primary and high schools anticipating their reopening.– The UK military are working closely with the Bermudan military, who have sent 30 of their rank to assist in Grand Turk, and the Canadian military who have a frigate ship based off South Caicos from which they to are assisting the local community, not least with provision of water.– The UK’s Department for International Development has delivered 400 shelter kits and 655 litres of bottled water to South Caicos.– Yesterday in Provo, UK Aid delivered 276 shelter kits which include two 7×5 tarpaulin sheets and 24m of rope each, these are vital for repairing roofs.– UK Aid will shortly be delivering a health kit to South Caicos which contains enough vaccines for 10,000 people for three months. We remain grateful for the additional show of support from the UK Government evidenced by the visit of Lord Ahmad, Minister of State at the FCO with responsibility for the UK Overseas Territories.    We are equally grateful for the visits of regional leaders and the visit of the Chairman of Caricom, Prime Minister of Grenada, Hon Dr Keith Mitchell who led a high level Caribbean delegation in a show of regional support.Hurricane MariaOur responsibility for disaster management does not of course end with Irma and we must state clearly now that the recently formed Hurricane Maria may also pose a threat to the TCI later this week.   Once again we must make ourselves ready as a community and as individuals to face down that new Hurricane should it, as currently seems highly possible, threaten and risk further damage to these Islands and people. We in government will again prepare shelters and take other measures; but this must involve us all as individuals and families and we encourage you now to prepare as best you are able to take steps to ensure adequate water and food provision both during as well as after the possible passage of Maria which is forecast currently to be possible on Thursday and Friday of this week.Press Statement: TCIG Related Items:last_img read more
