Griffith weighs in on Jaguars performance

first_imgChairman of Selectors, Rayon Griffith, believes underpermance by the top order batsmen and fast bowlers, coupled with a less than impressive fielding effort, contributed to Guyana Jaguars surrendering this year’s West Indies Championship title. The West Indies women’s assistant coach said that the team failed to perform the way it used to.“I would say we didn’t perform the way we normally perform. The team was holding on until the sixth round and I think the drawn match against Leewards and the loss against Barbados really pushed us back,” he said.Griffith said although the team is unable to win the championship, it still has to try to maintain the standard of cricket it is known for.  “Even with the standings we aren’t too far away from Trinidad. We already can’t win the competition, but we still have to play our best cricket and actually maintain our standard of cricket we have played for this country over the last six years.”The five-time, defending champions, are currently in fourth position, tied on points with Jamaica Scorpions who have 91.8 points but with an inferior net run rate. Trinidad and Tobago Red Force sits in second place with 94.6 points while Barbados Pride leads with 134.8 points after eight rounds.“This is not one of our years. We did well over the last five years and it’s just that we didn’t capitalize on some of the key areas like the foundation when it comes to batting this year. I think the (numbers) one to four batsmen didn’t set up the game and that pegged us back from making those big totals in the first innings. We only had three 300 plus scores and we won two of those games and it shows when you score heavily what happens,” Griffith said. He said that none of the Jaguars batsmen are in the top seven run-getters this season which reflects their underperformance this season.Leon Johnson is the team’s leading scorer with 472 runs while Christopher Barnwell is the only other batsman with over 400 runs. Both batsmen have one century each and two fifties.Griffith said that those scores were not enough with the top five batsmen in the competition scoring over 500 runs each. Jermaine Blackwood leads the table with 768 runs while hitting six fifties and a double century. Kyle Mayers scored two tons and five half-centuries in his 654 aggregate while Devon Smith has 649 runs with four fifties and one ton. Nkrumah Bonner scored two fifties and two centuries to bring his tally to 523. Guyana Jaguars openers,  Chandrapaul Hemraj (329) and Tagenarine Chanderpaul (315) along with Vishaul Singh (381) have three fifties each with no triple-figure score. Griffith concluded that the batsmen were inconsistent.Chanderpaul has a highest score of  12 in his last nine innings while Singh has been dismissed for single figure scores in six of his 13 innings.Griffith also pointed out that the lower order batsmen too underperformed. He said that Clinton Pestano, Raymon Reifer and Romario Shepherd all made healthy contributions in the past while Anthony Bramble was the team’s leading run getter last season with 580 runs. The former national fast bowler also compared the contributions of the fast bowlers to the Barbados Pride fast men this season.“With the fast bowlers, they did well for many years and I think this year we didn’t do that well. Going back, last year we had over 100 fast bowling wickets and this year we have near around half of that and I think that is where Barbados have the edge over the competition because they have three fast bowlers with around 30 wickets each,” Griffith stated.Last season, the Jaguars seamers took 126 wickets but they have only taken 64 this season. Nial Smith leads the way with 20, Reifer has 16 and Keon Joseph, a dozen. Of the Pride trio, Chemar Holder has 36, Kemar Roach 30 and Keon Harding 29.The three are among the top seven bowlers of the tournament. That table is led by Guyanese left-arm spinner, Veerasammy Permaul who has 50 wickets so far.Meanwhile, the 41-year-old also pointed out that the fielding department also did not do justice to its capabilities, highlighting this year the fielding seemed to be below standard. He pointed out that the slip cordon, in particular, did not step up as they did in the previous years. Heading into the final two matches, Griffith said that the goal will be to finish in the best possible position while giving some younger players a chance to develop.“Going forward for the last two games I think we have some time off due to the coronavirus and I think that definitely needs to go away before we resume but I think we, the coaches, selectors and management need to sit down and assess the way forward…I saw a lot of people suggesting changes and so but at the end of the day, we still have our job to do and try to maintain that standard of cricket we are accustomed to producing…Not every time things go your way and if you look at it the team didn’t do so badly but at the end of the day we have to try come out in a good position and try to develop the young players…,” he stated.last_img read more

Unibet – RWC 2015 to break all rugby wagering records

first_img Unibet backs #GoRacingGreen as lead racing charity  July 28, 2020 Related Articles Kindred: Spelinspektionen has failed in its management of Swedish marketplace June 11, 2020 Share Despite host nation England not qualifying out of the group stage and no home nation’s side making the semi-finals, Unibet states that it had been delighted by Rugby World Cup 2015 trading.Detailing market performance Ed Nicholson, Head of Unibet UK Marketing Operations commented that RWC 2015 will likely become the bookmakers biggest ever rugby market.“We have been delighted with trading so far and England’s exit has not dampened the interest for punters. This will be Unibet’s biggest RWC ever, and we have seen a real move away from the traditional Pre Match betting markets towards our live product, especially with so many tight Quarter Finals last weekend.  We will be amazed if the final doesn’t break our all-time rugby turnover record.”Noting marketing intricacies, Nicholson  added that ‘tight’ matches in the RWC group stages combined with shocks, had helped gain wagering interesting for the competition.“Wales’ defeat of England may have been a big surprise to the pundits, but not to our customers, as they were actually very well backed! Aside from that, it has been a particularly solid tournament – good turnover,  a few shocks – many of the so called smaller teams such as Japan, Romania and USA getting closer to the more established nations than many thought. But, with 3 of the 4 expected teams making the Semi Finals – according to the initial betting – ultimately the expected teams have progressed with only England missing out.”Unibet’s strong RWC trading may however turn soar, if the heavily backed New Zealand side take home the Web Ellis Cup. Prior to the tournament beginning, the bookmaker had branded the side the “All Backs” due to their popularity throughout all RWC betting markets.“It has to be anyone aside from New Zealand for our trading team! Unibet has a huge risk on the All Blacks winning the tournament with customers backing them front start to finish. Although we have had some potentially shrewd bets on Australia when they were as big as 9/1 Share Kindred marks fastest route to ‘normal trading’ as it delivers H1 growth July 24, 2020 StumbleUpon Submitlast_img read more

Former Orioles outfielder Gibbons calls it quits at age 35

first_imgFormer Orioles outfielder Jay Gibbons retired from baseball Monday after nine years in the big leagues and several more in the minors trying to recapture the prosperity he once enjoyed in Baltimore. The 35-year-old’s decision was announced by the Milwaukee Brewers organization after he had played for their Double-A and Triple-A affiliates this season.Playing for the Orioles from 2001 through 2007, Gibbons hit .260 with 121 home runs and 405 runs batted in in 779 games. Gibbons was named the club’s most valuable player in 2003 after hitting 23 home runs, driving in a career-best 100 runs, and posting a .277 batting average. The outfielder and occasional first baseman also found success in 2005 when slugging 26 home runs and driving in 79 runs in only 139 games. That production prompted the Orioles to sign Gibbons to a four-year, $21 contract prior to the 2006 season, a move the club would regret given after would take place over the next two years.Gibbons’ career will forever be linked to steroids after a 2006 Los Angeles Times report revealed former teammate Jason Grimsley had told federal agents the left-handed hitter used anabolic steroids. While the story was denounced by Gibbons, he would then be the subject of a Sports Illustrated report a year later saying he received shipments of performance-enhancing drugs from an Orlando-based pharmacy over a two-year period earlier in his career. He was also cited in the infamous Mitchell Report and suspended 15 days at the start of the 2008 season for violating baseball’s drug policy.Released by the Orioles prior to the start of the 2008 season despite having two years remaining and nearly $12 million owed on his contract, Gibbons would toil in minor league baseball for three years before finally making it back to the major leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010 and 2011. The left-handed hitter batted .269 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 61 games over two seasons with the Dodgers.Gibbon’s retirement comes after he hit a combined .253 at Double-A Huntsville and Triple-A Nashville this season.last_img read more

Holtby Leads Caps to 6th Straight Victory

first_imgIt’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.Well that definitely applies to Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby and his club on Thursday night. The Caps found themselves down 14-0 in shots on goal and 1-0 on the scoreboard midway through the opening period at the Verizon Center before rallying with two tallies in the middle frame then adding an empty net goal in the closing seconds to defeat a pesky Carolina Hurricanes team, 3-1.The victory, their sixth in a row, pushes the Caps to 22-17-2 (46 points) and keeps them two points ahead of Winnipeg in the Southeast Division race. It was a win against a struggling team that Washington had to have and they delivered. It was far from pretty though. The Caps were slow out of the gate and even when their passion and energy picked up, they were just a fraction off nearly all night. But that effort level is what carried the day and more importantly, Holtby was awesome in net (43 saves).Alex Ovechkin was held without a point but he had 15 shot attempts, including one in the second period that seemed to dent the post. The Gr8’s line was very strong but Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson each had only one shot attempt. Both Nicky and JoJo probably should start looking for their shot a little more because teams are going to be focusing on a red hot Ovechkin. Still, Backstrom had an assist and was once again really strong on the puck. His hard work on the boards at the Caps blueline at the end of the game, along with John Carlson, allowed Troy Brouwer (2 goals) to hit the empty net and put the nail biter away. Johansson was super backchecking and using his speed and he gutted through getting banged up early on in this one. He forced the puck to Ovechkin a little too much for my liking but he was still really solid in this contest.Several others had excellent outings including the 4th line of Jay Beagle, Matt Hendricks, and Wojtek Wolski. Beagle set up a late charging Mike Green for the eventual game winner after Wolski made a super play on the offensive zone entry. I think Wolski earned himself some more minutes with his effort on Thursday night.Mike Ribeiro, after a rough start, was also fairly dominant the last two frames as the second line center. He was playing agitated all night and his two way play was excellent. Brouwer, of course, had the two tallies to lead the offense. Aaron Volpatti played hard on that second line but he is offensively challenged. But when it was all over, the man of the night was Holtby who made numerous quality saves and Carlson bailed him out on a puck lying in the crease early on. Holtbeast was a little erratic to start but he settled down quickly and won the game for Washington. It was nice to see the strong play in goal after teammate Michal Neuvirth had two straight super outings. Coach Adam Oates has to be really pleased with his goaltending tandem right now. Both guys are fierce competitors and the players recognize that.So the Caps didn’t play close to their best game on Thursday night, but they did what they had to do to get a victory. At this point, that is what matters most. The Southeast Division title is in their control with just seven games to go. You can’t ask for more than that.Notes: Both clubs notched a power play goal in a contest that got chippier as the evening went on. The Caps won the season series, 4-1, over Carolina and won the last three games after trailing, 2-0, 2-0, and 1-0, respectively…the Caps won the faceoff battle 32-31 with Backstrom going 13-8…next up for the Caps are the Tampa Bay Lightning at 7pm on Saturday night at the Verizon Center.last_img read more

Will Webb accept pay cut to remain with Ravens?

first_imgWith veteran Lardarius Webb carrying the sixth-highest salary cap figure among NFL cornerbacks, it’s hardly surprising that the Ravens are asking him to take a pay cut.Whether he accepts is the question as the NFL Network reported Tuesday that Baltimore has officially asked the 29-year-old defensive back to take less than his $8 million base salary for the 2015 season. Webb carries a $12 million cap figure, which is just behind the likes of Dallas’ Brandon Carr ($12.717 million) and Seattle’s Richard Sherman ($12.2 million) for this coming season. Few would say that Webb belongs in that category of players as injuries have stunted a player who once played at a Pro Bowl level before suffering the second anterior cruciate ligament tear of his NFL career during the 2012 season.A back injury cost Webb all of last year’s training camp and three of the first four games of the regular season before he struggled to regain his pre-injury form the rest of the way, finishing 52nd among cornerbacks who took at least half of his team’s snaps in Pro Football Focus’ grading system. The 2009 third-round pick will be 30 in October and signed a six-year, $50 million contract prior to the 2012 season. It remains unclear how much less the Ravens are asking Webb to take, but the question for him is whether he thinks another team would give him more than the revised salary general manager Ozzie Newsome is offering. It was roughly six months ago that the Ravens restructured Webb’s contract for the 2014 season, flipping $4 million of his $7.5 million base salary into a bonus and reducing his cap figure. Of course, that adjustment came with the consequence of adding $1 million to his cap figure in each of the next three seasons. The request of a pay cut is almost always accompanied by the consequence that a player will be released if he doesn’t accept it — no player would ever accept one if that weren’t the case — but the Ravens would save only $2 million in cap space unless they declare Webb a post-June 1 release. Such a maneuver would clear $8 million in cap space, but that relief wouldn’t come until after June 1 when the bulk of free-agent activity has already concluded. If Newsome believes he can find another comparable veteran — Cary Williams was released on Tuesday — at the same salary or for less than what they’re currently offering Webb, the decision to release him becomes much easier. But they also know cornerback is a major priority and they will already be looking to select one in the early rounds of this year’s draft. The Ravens can certainly use the cap savings, but they would come with more uncertainty in the secondary if Webb were to be sent packing after six years in Baltimore.last_img read more
