Fish parasite is a stripped-down jellyfish

first_imgIn rainbow trout, infection by a parasite called a myxozoan literally drives the fish crazy, causing a “whirling disease” that robs the fish of any control of its behavior, posing a serious threat to fish farms in the process. Now, researchers have proof that these tiny pests, consisting of just a few cells, are actually stripped-down jellyfish. Myxozoans were once considered protists—falling into the same group as amoebas, paramecia, and slime molds. But a few researchers questioned this categorization, noting that myxozoans contain a complex structure called a polar capsule that includes a barbed filament used to latch onto the host. This capsule looks a lot like the stinging cells of jellyfish. And with good reason, researchers report online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: Genetically speaking, myxozoans belong to the cnidarian family tree, a group that includes jellyfish, hydra, and corals. The team compared the genomes and surveys of active genes of two myxozoans with those of true jellyfish, as well as those of Polypodium hydriforme, a parasite with a jellyfishlike life stage. Myxozoans, the team reports, are most closely related to Polypodium and share a common ancestor with jellyfish. As they became parasitic and pared their bodies to less than a dozen cells, myxozoans let go of a lot of their DNA, with one species shrinking its genome to 22.5 million bases, one-fortieth the size of Polypodium and other jellyfish genomes. Today myxozoans have 30% fewer genes than these relatives, and they lack the genes needed for multicellular development and differentiation, as well as those for cell-to-cell communication. Next, the scientists want to try to figure out just how a complex multicellular free-living jellyfish evolved into a parasite organism with just a few cells.last_img read more

BJP MP asks government not to hold Indo-Pak cricket series

first_imgA BJP member in Lok Sabha on Monday asked the government not to hold an Indo-Pak cricket series questioning the need for having sporting ties with a country which shelters terrorists responsible for carrying out attacks in India.Former Union Home Secretary and BJP MP RK Singh said at a time when terror mastermind Hafiz Saeed is roaming freely in Pakistan and another terrorist Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi has been granted fresh bail, “what is point of playing cricket with them…I do not understand.”The government should not hold such a cricket series or “reconsider” any decision on the matter as Home Minister Rajnath Singh has informed the House that Mumbai serial blasts mastermind Dawood Ibrahim has been given shelter in Pakistan, he said. While most BJP members were silent, he got support from the opposition benches when he raised the issue during Zero Hour.Reports have it that in December, India could take on Pakistan in their first ‘away’ bilateral cricket series in almost a decade.India and Pakistan cricket board chiefs met in Kolkata on Sunday and said that the series would likely comprise three Tests, five one-day internationals and two T20 games. The issue of ban on fishing on high seas from the present 47 days to 61 raised by KC Venugopal also saw heated exchanges between the opposition and the treasury benches leading to adjournment of the House for 10 minutes during Zero Hour.Venugopal said the decision to extend the period of ban was based on the recommendation of a committee. He said the former chairperson of the panel and the present incumbent have now opposed the findings, therefore, the government should withdraw the ban.advertisementFellow members from Kerala beloning to Left parties supported Venugopal and wanted a further discussion. As they pressed for a discussion, Santok Singh Chaudhury (Cong) could not raise his issue despite repeated attempts.Meanwhile, Ramesh Bidhuri said something much to the chagrin of members from Kerala, which led to heated exchange of words between the opposition and treasury benches. As some BJP members tried to pacify Bidhuri, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy said when Congress member Venugopal did not allow fellow party MP Chaudhury to raise his issue, the BJP would find it difficult to contain members like Bidhuri.Amid din, speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House for 10 minutes.last_img read more

James Martin/CNET E3 2019 for Microsoft is all about its next-gen Xbox console, called Project Scarlett. As part of that focus, Microsoft on Monday released its final batch of classic Xbox games that’ve been re-engineered for compatibility with the current Xbox console, the Xbox One. Now, instead of tweaking more older games to work on the Xbox One, the company will start working on making Xbox One games compatible with upcoming iterations of the console. “We have now shifted our focus to help make the games you love playing on Xbox One compatible with future Xbox hardware,” Jason Ronald, director of the Xbox platform, said in a blog post. “After this week, we have no plans to add additional Original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles to the catalog on Xbox One, but we’re excited to continue our work on Xbox compatibility across platforms and devices, which remains a top priority.” Microsoft began Xbox One backward compatible support in 2015, first with Xbox 360 games, then eventually with original Xbox games. The company would deliver periodic updates of older titles to make them compatible with the latest console.   Microsoft officially announced its new Xbox console on Sunday during the company’s E3 press conference. The next-generation hardware will have an SSD drive, GDDR6 RAM and a CPU and GPU from AMD that’ll make the system four times more powerful than the Xbox One, the company says. Microsoft didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.  Microsoftlast_img read more
